About

Welcome to the site behind the man. Or to the man behind this site. My name is Stefan de Vries, and I am … eh well… I think I am mainly a journalist/writer/director. I am currently working as a foreign correspondent in France for several Dutch media. You can find my articles and my radio and television reports on my site devries.fr (currently in Dutch only).

My life on earth started on a sunny afternoon in June 1970, on the same day Alexander the Great died 2293 years before. Inspired by my belated arrival, the US would launch a new peace plan for the Middle East a couple of weeks later. The same year The Jackson 5 released their classic album ABC, while the Beatles finally split up. M*A*S*H was a big movie hit, and Coco Chanel and Pablo Picasso were still alive… Those days are gone, but I am here and now. I was named after a song by Mireille Matthieu, and if you don’t know who she is, than it’s better to keep it that way.

I was born in the capital of the Dutch province of Zeeland, Middelburg, a centuries-old town which was once the global epic centre of slave trade. In 1988 I moved to Amsterdam, spent some time in Aruba, went back to Amsterdam and in 1999 I finaly moved to Paris. In 2002, I spent about six months in Los Angeles and then moved back to Paris, where I started working as a journalist and film maker. Or as a traveller, an eternal student and an epicure (some might say a hedonist). I don’t like labels. And I can’t distinguish right from left, nor east from west. Or vice from versa.

If you would like to contact me to offer me a job, to propose to me, to tell me a story, to sing me a song or to insult me, then I am happy to inform you that there are many ways you can reach me.

I live in Paris, but you can find me sometimes in The Netherlands or in Spain as well. If you are interested in my resume, you can download it here as a PDF (in English, Français or Nederlands).

Being a Gemini, I have many personalities. According to some of Google’s 16,100 hits on “Stefan de Vries“, I am apparently also:

- The inventor of softdrink Maraca
- A pretty good sailor
- A pretentious little webdesigner
- A teacher at Borah High School, Boise, Idaho
- A young world traveller
- Not such a bad skater
- A staff member of Airbus Deutschland
- an
einkaufer Frischdienst
- A Karaoke Singer in Australia
